When my brother and I played Altar of Freedom for the first time we where quite happy with the game mechanics. It was clear that we would prepare for more battles. I downloaded the AoF Grand Tactical Scenarios in the West. There I looked for one of the smaller scenarios as a starter. I chose “The Battle of Champion Hill”, a game that I deem manageable.
Inspired by the excellent youtube video on a refight of Gettysbourg, today my brother and I gave the Altar of Freedom grand tactical rules a trial. For a starter we looked to the Second Battle of Kernstone that took place on July 24 1864 during Jubal Early’s Shenandoah campaign.
Wanting a quick pass to a trial wargame we set up a table with what rudimentary terrain pieces there were at hand. Continue reading
