This game from GMT covers the first year of the Serbian Campaign, the campaign that startet the Great War in late July 1914 when Austro-Hungarian forces invaded the Kingdom of Serbia. This particular and historically significant conflict has not been covered in a wargame as far as I know. This allows me to learn more about a region and a period that I have been up until now little aware of.
The game arrived a few days ago. What I really liked from the onset is the high quality of all the game components. The map looks quite appealing and I feel invited to explore this region of Europe yet unfamiliar to me. I am now in the process of preparing the counters and of understanding the rules. Basically the rules appear to be simple and straight forward, but they do incorporate a few concepts that might take time and effort to grasp. I understand that the 1914 series is more of a simulation than a game.
There also is available a Module of the game for VASSAL. This is quite fortunate I think. And I indend to play the campaign game against an opponent by PBEM at least once. If so, I will surely report my exploits here. The pics below show the starting positions on the Danube in the north and in the Montenegrin mountains in the west.
